What does stone veneer installation involve?

Stone veneer installation in San Diego puts a facing of natural or manufactured stone over an existing wall, so it looks like stone without building a stone wall. Manufactured veneer is a lightweight, cement-based product made to look like natural stone, and it doesn't carry any load, so it's only as good as the wall behind it.

Most people call because they have a bare block wall in the yard, a front that looks flat or a fireplace that looks dated, and they want it to look like it belongs to the house. Industry guidance says that when veneer gives trouble, the cause is usually how it was put on rather than the stone, so the hands doing the work matter as much as the stone you pick. Your price moves with the wall's size, whether you choose natural or manufactured stone, how many corners need trim pieces and how much work the wall needs first. The schedule turns on that same prep, any permit and inspections, and the weather. I'll give you your own figure when I come out and see the wall.

Is stone veneer right for your home?

  • Plain block yard walls

A sound concrete block wall takes veneer well and stops looking like a utility wall.

  • A front that looks flat

Stone along the lower part of a front wall or entry adds depth without rebuilding anything.

  • Columns and porch posts

Wrapping posts or columns in stone ties them to the rest of the house and yard.

  • A dated fireplace surround

Lightweight manufactured stone can face an existing fireplace without building a new one from scratch.

How we handle stone veneer installation

I start by looking hard at the wall, because veneer only holds up as well as the wall behind it and the hands putting it on. If the wall is sound, we clean it and get the surface ready so the backing bonds. Then we lay the stone out on the ground to mix colors and sizes before anything goes up. Each stone goes on with a full bed of mortar so there are no hollow pockets left to hold water, and we fill the joints and clean the face as we go.

A lot of veneer goes onto block, so if the wall you want faced isn't built yet, we can put up new concrete block walls and face them once they're ready. If the stone is going around the base of the house and the block underneath is cracked or failing, our foundation block wall installation work comes first, because I'd rather fix that than cover it up.

  • Full wall coverage

This suits a feature wall, a chimney face or a column you want to read as solid stone. It uses the most stone and takes the most hand work.

  • Lower band or wainscot

Stone runs across the bottom few feet of a wall, which works well as an accent on a stucco house. It uses less stone and still changes how the front looks.

  • Grouted joints

The mortar between stones shows, giving a more traditional, rugged look. It's forgiving with irregular stone shapes.

  • Tight-fitted dry-stack look

Stones fit close with little joint showing, for a cleaner, more modern face. Each piece takes more fitting, so expect more labor than grouted work.

Natural or manufactured stone veneer?

Both work. It comes down to your wall and the weather.

Manufactured veneer is lightweight and made from cement and aggregate to look like natural stone. Most natural stone is durable, but not every type is suggested for outdoor use. The industry guidance is to pick a stone that has stood up to the weather in your area, so it's fair to ask which stones have done well here.

For most existing walls on a house, I lean toward manufactured stone because it's light and made for this job. Natural stone makes sense when you want the real thing for an outdoor wall, as long as it's a type with a track record outside. I'll tell you plainly which one your wall suits.

Why San Diego homeowners call Artisan San Diego Concrete & Masonry for stone veneer

  • The person who quotes it checks it

I give the estimate myself, and I'm on site checking as our own masons and helpers set the stone. That way the wall you were promised is the wall you get.

  • Learned the trade on San Diego crews

I started as a helper on a small masonry crew here, mixing mortar and watching the older hands fix what others got wrong, and I started this business in 2023. That's why I look at the wall behind the stone before I talk about the stone.

  • Licensed and fully insured in California

We're licensed and fully insured. California's contractor board counts natural and manufactured stone as masonry work, so you can look up any installer's license with the state board before you sign.

Stone veneer questions we hear

How much does stone veneer installation cost in San Diego?

A midrange manufactured stone veneer job in San Diego usually costs about $11,000 to $14,900. That's what the work usually runs around here, not our quote. Your price depends mostly on the wall's size, the stone you choose and the prep the wall needs, and I'll give you your own number when I see it.

Can stone veneer go over any wall?

No. Industry guidance says manufactured stone veneer shouldn't go over a wall that's deteriorating or unsound, or over EIFS, an insulated synthetic stucco finish. If your wall is worn or has that finish, it has to be dealt with first, and I'll tell you what you've got when I look at it.

How do I get a painted wall ready for stone veneer?

Any paint or coating that would keep the mortar from bonding has to come off first, and the wall underneath has to be sound enough to hold the stone. We handle that prep before any stone goes up, and I'll show you how much your wall needs during the estimate.

What goes behind manufactured stone veneer?

Manufactured stone veneer goes on in layers, not straight onto the wall. Industry specifications call for a water-resistive barrier, then either metal lath with a scratch coat, a rough first coat of mortar, or cement board, and a weep screed or flashing at the bottom so water can get out. Each layer helps keep water out of the wall.

How long does stone veneer installation take?

Most of the time goes into getting the wall ready and setting stone by hand, so a bigger wall or one that needs repair takes longer. Industry guidance says fresh work has to be kept from drying too fast when it's over 100°F, or over 90°F with wind above 8 mph, before, during and for 72 hours after. A hot, windy stretch can move the schedule, and if a permit is needed, inspections also set part of the pace.

Does an older home in San Diego need historic review before adding stone veneer?

It might. The city says a project may need historic review if the property is designated historic or sits in a historic district, and it may also apply on a site with a structure 45 years old or older. We check that along with the permit question before work starts.

Thinking about stone for your wall?

I'll come out, look at the wall with you and give you an estimate right there on site.

Stone veneer installation permits and inspections in San Diego

The City of San Diego requires a building permit to improve existing buildings and other structures, and only like-for-like maintenance repairs up to $1,000.00 are exempt. Whether your veneer job needs one comes down to the wall and the work. Before we start, we check with the city, or with the County of San Diego if you're outside city limits, and when a permit is required, we take care of the paperwork and the inspections. The city inspects building projects at different phases, so we build those checks into the schedule from the start.

Around San Diego, we face a lot of stucco fronts and concrete block yard walls, and many of the houses have some age on them, so checking the wall underneath is a big part of every veneer job. We see the same mix on jobs in La Mesa and El Cajon, and we work across the city and the cities around it, in city limits and unincorporated county areas.
