Masonry work across San Diego
I learned this trade on a San Diego crew, mixing mortar and hauling block while the older masons laid brick, so this is the city whose houses I know best. It has a little of everything: older brick and stucco houses in the neighborhoods close to downtown, newer tract homes farther out, condos, and small shops with block or brick fronts. We work across the city and the cities around it, from National City and Chula Vista to the south to La Mesa to the east, inside city limits and in unincorporated county areas.
That mix shapes the job before anything else. An older house usually needs repair matched to what's already there, and a newer lot more often needs something built to fit the yard. Either way, size, material, access and how much has actually failed move the price, and a permit and its inspections move the schedule most. I'll put a number on your job once I've seen it.
What we do for San Diego homes
Foundation repair
When a crack shows up in an older San Diego foundation, we find what moved and repair that section rather than the whole thing.

Plenty of older houses here still have their original brick chimney, and a cracked cap or open joints up top is what we fix most.

We rake out crumbling mortar and pack in fresh, matched to the old color so the repair on older brick here doesn't stand out.

Flaking or cracked bricks on a porch step or garden wall around the city usually mean a spot repair, not a new wall.

Pavers suit the short, steep driveways on many San Diego lots, because single pieces can be lifted and reset if a section settles.

Many yards here sit on a slope, so our retaining walls are sized to the lot, with drains behind them to let water out.

On older houses and buildings around the city, we bring tired brick and stone back by repairing what failed and leaving sound work alone.

Stucco houses here often get stone veneer on a front wall or columns. We set it over a backing that keeps water out of the wall.

Block walls divide most San Diego backyards. We build new ones and rebuild leaning sections, with steel and grout inside the block.

We build outdoor kitchens in block, brick or stone, laid out around how you cook and how your San Diego patio gets used.

Front walks on older lots often crack or lift with tree roots. We rebuild them in brick, stone or pavers over a packed base.

Stone suits a lot of San Diego entries, planters and low walls. We lay it by hand, choosing each piece so the joints stay tight.

On many brick walls around the city, only a few joints have opened. Pointing fills just those, and it's often all the wall needs.

What San Diego houses and yards ask of masonry
A lot of the brick and block we see in San Diego has been up for decades, and the mortar usually goes before the brick does. Joints turn sandy, a chimney cap cracks, or a garden wall starts to lean. We find what actually failed and fix that, matching the mortar color and the brick so the repair looks like it belongs, and we leave sound work alone. Our own masons do the work, and I'm on site checking it as it goes. If your house is older, it may also draw a historic review, which the questions below cover.
Yards here rarely sit dead flat, so a wall has to suit the lot it's on. That means the right footing, steel where the wall calls for it and a way for water to drain out from behind, because water trapped behind a wall is what pushes it over.

San Diego masonry questions
Do I need a city permit for a masonry project in San Diego?
If the job builds something new or improves an existing structure, plan on it, because the City of San Diego requires a building permit for that unless the project is on its exempt list. The city's Development Services Department issues the permits. Before work starts we check with the city, or the County of San Diego outside city limits, and when a permit is required we take care of the paperwork and the inspections.
Does a masonry contractor in San Diego need a California license?
Yes, for almost any masonry job, because the California Contractors State License Board requires a license when the project needs a building permit, uses employees, or the labor and materials come to $1,000 or more. Only a small job under $1,000 that needs no permit and uses no employee labor can fall outside that. Every business working in the city also needs a city Business Tax Certificate, which doesn't replace the state license or a permit. We're licensed and fully insured.
How much does masonry work cost in San Diego?
There's no set price, because your number depends on what I find on site, and in San Diego that often includes matching brick and mortar on an older house or fitting a wall into a sloped yard. A permit or a historic review can add time and cost too. I'd rather price a small repair that fixes the problem than a rebuild you don't need.
How do I find out if my older San Diego house needs a historic review?
Your project may need one if the house is 45 years old or more, is designated historic or sits in a historic district, because the city can check those projects against its historic resources rules. It doesn't apply to every older house, so we ask about it when we check with the city on what your job needs.
What building code applies to a new masonry wall in San Diego?
Anything applied for now goes under the 2025 California Building Code plus the city's own local changes, since that code covers applications submitted on or after January 1, 2026. For you, that means a wall we build under a permit today is built and inspected to the current code, not an older one.
How long does it take to build a block wall in San Diego?
The laying is usually the shorter part, because a permitted wall waits on city review before we start and on inspections as it goes up. Footings and grout also need time to set before the next stage, so a wall comes together in steps rather than all at once. I'll lay out the order of things when I come out.
