Questions San Diego homeowners ask

How much does brick and mortar repair cost in San Diego?

It comes down to how much has actually failed, so repointing a few soft joints costs far less than rebuilding a chimney top or a section of wall. Matching old brick, working up high and any permit add to it. I'll give you your own number at the free on-site estimate.

Can a small repair fix my brick wall, or do I need to replace it?

Usually a repair will do when the wall is standing straight and only some brick or joints have gone bad. I'd rather tell you a small fix is enough than talk you into a rebuild. A wall that's leaning or cracked clean through is a different story, and I'll tell you that at the estimate.

How long does it take to repair or build a masonry wall in San Diego?

That depends on the size of the job and whether it needs a permit, since permit review and inspections add steps before and during the work. A few joints or bricks go quicker than a new wall built from the footing up. I'll walk you through the schedule when I give you the estimate.

Does a masonry contractor in San Diego need a state license?

Yes, for nearly any masonry job you'd hire out. The state licensing board requires a license when the work needs a building permit, uses employees, or the labor and materials on the project add up to $1,000 or more. Any business working in the city also needs a city Business Tax Certificate, which doesn't replace that license, and we're licensed and fully insured.

What happens after I call for a masonry estimate?

We reply within one business day and set a time for me to come out, look at the work and give you a free estimate with no obligation. If you go ahead, we check with the city or the county on what the job needs and handle any permit. Our own masons and helpers do the work, and I'm on site checking it as it goes.

Do you guarantee your masonry work?

Yes, every job is backed by our satisfaction guarantee. I'm on site checking the work as it goes, so problems get caught while our crew is still there.

Will new mortar match the old brick on my house?

We match the color, texture and joint shape as closely as the old work allows, so the repair looks like it belongs to the house. On older brick the mortar also has to suit the brick, because mortar that's harder than the brick can damage the brick around it.

Does my masonry project need a permit in San Diego?

It depends on the job, so we check with the city or the county before we start. Inside the City of San Diego, the Development Services Department issues permits, and a building permit is required to build any new structure or improve an existing one. If your house is 45 years or older or sits in a historic district, the city may also call for a historic review, and when a permit is needed we handle the paperwork and inspections.
