What does it take to build a brick wall in San Diego?

Brick wall installation in San Diego means building a garden wall or fence from fired clay brick on a footing we dig before the first course goes down, so you end up with a wall that stays straight and gives your yard real privacy.

Most people who call us have a stretch of yard that needs closing in, a fence that's given out, or a sloped lot where they want something that lasts. We're based in San Diego and build across the city and the cities around it, in city limits and unincorporated county areas. The price moves with the wall's length and height, whether it's solid brick or pier and panel, the brick you pick, how much the ground slopes and how easy it is to get material to the spot. The schedule mostly turns on whether your wall needs a permit and how soon the brick you want can be had. If you already have a wall that's only cracked in places, brick repair may be all it needs, and I'll tell you so at the estimate, where you get a price for your own wall.

Is brick wall installation right for your home?

  • Yard needs more privacy

A solid brick wall blocks the view and street noise better than most wood or wire fences.

  • Lot that slopes or steps

A pier and panel wall can step down with the ground, so it suits uneven yards.

  • House already has brick

A new wall in matching brick looks like it belongs with the house instead of tacked on.

  • Fence that keeps failing

Brick doesn't rot or warp, so it's a good fit when wood fences keep needing new boards.

How we handle brick wall installation

I start by walking the line with you and marking where the wall goes. Our crew digs and sets the footing before any brick goes up, because a wall is only as straight as what's under it. Then our masons lay the brick course by course, keeping the joints full so water has nowhere to sit, and finish the top with a cap. We clean up as we go, so you're not left with a yard full of broken brick and mortar dust.

Some yards need more than one kind of masonry. Stone masonry can go on the piers or the cap if you like a mix of materials, and if an older brick wall nearby has worn joints, brick pointing firms it up so it sits well beside the new one. Where the ground has to be held back, that's retaining wall construction, which we build differently from a freestanding garden wall.

  • Solid brick wall

A full wall of brick gives the most privacy and the most finished look, and it suits flat ground where cost isn't the main worry. It takes more brick, so it usually runs higher than other designs.

  • Pier and panel wall

Thin brick panels braced by brick piers spaced along the run use less material, so it's the one I'd suggest if you're watching cost. It also steps with the ground easily, which makes it a good fit when your lot isn't level.

What happens when you call about a brick wall in San Diego?

  1. Call or send us a message

Call (619) 220-2261 or use the form, and tell us roughly how long and tall you want the wall and which yard it's in. We'll set a time for me to come out.

  2. I look and price it

I walk the spot, ask what you have in mind and check how the ground falls. You get a price for your wall on site, along with my take on the design and height, so you know the cost before anything is dug.

  3. We build and walk through

Once you say go, we check what your city or the county needs, then our masons set the footing and lay the brick while I check the work as it goes. When the cap is on and the site's clean, we walk the finished wall with you.

Reclaimed or new brick for your wall?

Get the old look in brick rated for weather.

Old salvaged brick looks great, but it's often fired unevenly, and the brick industry's own guidance says used brick belongs in a garden wall only when it meets the severe weathering grade, which it usually doesn't. So if you want a reclaimed look, we find brick that's rated for outdoor walls and has that worn face, instead of old brick that may not hold up.

Why San Diego homeowners call Artisan San Diego Concrete & Masonry for brick walls

  • Same person, estimate to finish

I'm the one who comes out to look at your yard and give the estimate, and I'm back on site checking the work while our own masons and helpers build it. We've been doing this since 2023, and you deal with the same person from first look to final walk-through.

  • Licensed and fully insured masons

In California, brick walls and fences count as masonry contractor work under the state licensing board, so it pays to hire someone licensed. We're licensed and fully insured, and every job is backed by our satisfaction guarantee.

  • Height planned to city rules

I plan the wall's height and top around where it sits on your lot, because the city treats a front yard very differently from a side or rear yard. Call (619) 220-2261, weekdays 7 AM to 11 PM or weekends 8 AM to 10 PM, or send us your wall's length and height to get started.

Questions about brick walls

How much does a brick wall cost in San Diego?

Brick and masonry work in San Diego usually costs about $11 to $33 per square foot. Where your wall lands in that range depends on its height and length, solid brick versus pier and panel, the brick you choose and how much the ground slopes. I'll give you a price for your own wall at the estimate.

How tall can a brick wall be in my front yard in San Diego?

On the front or street-side property line, the city generally keeps a solid fence or wall at 3 feet or under. Set back farther inside the required front yard, it can rise to 6 feet at the setback line, so a taller front wall usually means moving it off the line.

Do I need a licensed contractor to build a small brick wall in California?

Usually yes, because California only lets someone without a license take minor work under $1,000 when the job needs no permit and they hire no one to help. If your wall needs any permit, the person building it needs a license whatever the price.

What causes white powder on a new brick wall?

That white film is usually new building bloom, which shows up shortly after a wall is built as it gives up water while drying. If it keeps coming back after that first stretch, water is likely getting into the wall and staying there, and that's worth having someone look at.

How do I keep rain from running down my brick wall?

Top the wall with a coping, the cap along the top, that sticks out past the brick face on both sides. A drip built into that overhang keeps water from flowing down the face, so the brick stays drier.

How long does it take to build a brick wall in San Diego?

It depends mostly on whether your wall needs a permit, how long and tall it is, and how soon the brick you pick can be had. Digging and setting the footing comes first, so brick work starts only after that's done, and I'll walk you through the order of work at the estimate.

Brick wall installation and San Diego's fence rules

The City of San Diego requires a Building Permit for fences 7 feet or taller and for retaining walls 3 feet or taller, so your wall's height and whether it holds back soil decide the paperwork. The city's fence rules also cap height by yard. In side and rear yards a fence can reach 9 feet, but anything above 6 feet has to be open, so a solid brick wall there usually stops at 6 feet and a taller one needs an open top section. Before we dig, we check with the city, or with the County of San Diego on unincorporated lots, and when a permit is needed we take care of the paperwork and the inspections.

An older city bulletin based its material requirements for masonry fences on design wind speed and Seismic Design Category D, an earthquake design rating, which is a good reminder that a garden wall here has to handle shaking. We see the same mix of street-side front walls and backyards that step down a slope on jobs in La Mesa and Chula Vista.
