What goes into building a concrete block wall in San Diego?
A concrete block wall is a fence or garden wall of stacked masonry block, and in San Diego we build them on a poured footing with steel inside, so your yard gets privacy, security, shade and less noise from the street.
Most people call us when an old wood fence has given out, when the neighbors feel a little too close or when a slope in the yard needs holding back. The price moves with the wall's length and height, solid or screen block, any curves, whether it holds back soil and how easily we can get block and a mixer to the spot. The schedule mostly turns on whether the city or the county wants a permit or engineered plans first. Once I've seen the yard I can give you an estimate on site, and if the wall has to hold back a hillside, our retaining wall construction page covers that side of the work.
Is a concrete block wall right for your home?
Yards that feel exposed
Solid block shuts out the street view and stands up to sun and sprinklers better than wood.
Busy or noisy streets
A solid masonry wall cuts traffic noise and adds security in a way a fence can't.
Patios that need shade and air
Open screen block breaks up the view and the sun while still letting the breeze through.
Sloped yards and uneven ground
A reinforced block wall can hold back soil and turn a hillside into usable flat yard.
How we build a concrete block wall
When I come out, I measure the run, look at the grade and find the property line so the wall ends up where it belongs. Our crew digs and pours a footing, then lays the block with steel set in the cells and along the courses, and grouts the cells that carry the load. We plan control joints, seams placed on purpose so the wall can shrink a little without cracking where you'd see it, and we space them with the reinforcement to keep shrinkage cracks down. Then we cap the top, clean the face and haul off what's left.
A block wall often ties into other work around the house. If you're adding a room or a crawlspace, foundation block wall installation is the same trade laid to carry a house instead of screen a yard. And if the new wall wraps a patio, we can build counters and a grill island to match it with outdoor kitchen masonry.
Solid block wall
This is the one for full privacy, security and cutting street noise. It suits front and side yards on busy roads or lots where the neighbors sit close.
Open screen block wall
Decorative open-face block lets light and air pass while still breaking up the view. It works well around patios, side yards and hot spots that need a breeze.
Curved or folded wall
The bends stiffen the wall side to side, so it can usually go taller than a straight run of the same block. It also gives the yard softer lines, though the layout takes more time.
Block retaining wall
When the wall holds back soil on a slope, water has to have a way out, so we build in drains through the wall. Where long, heavy rains are expected, a drain along the back can be added too.

I walk the wall line
I come out, look at where the wall will go and ask what's been going on, from the slope to what you want blocked out. You get your estimate right there on site.
We check rules and build
Once you say go, we check with your city or the County of San Diego on what the wall needs before anything is dug. Our own masons and helpers build it, and I'm on site checking the work as it goes.
We walk the finished wall
When the cap is on and the site is cleaned up, I walk the wall with you. If anything catches your eye, we look at it together then.
Solid block wall or open screen block?
Pick by what you want to block out.
Solid block gives you full privacy and does the most to quiet the street, so it's the right call along a busy road or a close neighbor's yard. Screen block lets light and air through while still breaking up the view, which suits a patio, a side yard or a corner that gets hot and still.
A lot of yards do best with both, like a solid lower wall with a band of screen block on top, or solid along the street and open along the garden. We'll talk through the look at the estimate, and I'll show you how each pattern sits against your house before you decide.

Building in San Diego since 2023
I learned this trade mixing mortar and hauling block on a San Diego crew, then started this business here in 2023. That's where I learned to build walls that suit the lot they sit on.
Backed by our satisfaction guarantee
I'd rather tell you a shorter wall or a simpler style will do than sell you more than your yard needs. Call (619) 220-2261 or send us a message and I'll come take a look.
Block wall questions we hear
How much does a concrete block wall cost in San Diego?
The price comes down mostly to how long and how tall the wall is, and whether it's plain solid block or decorative screen block. Curves, a wall that holds back soil and needs drainage, engineered plans or a soil report, and a tight backyard we have to carry block into all add to it. I'll give you your figure on site once I've seen where the wall goes.
How tall can my block wall be in San Diego?
Under an older city fence bulletin, a solid fence or wall on the front or street-side property line is held to 3 feet, with some exceptions, and side and rear yard walls can reach 9 feet as long as anything above 6 feet is built open. The city measures height from the lowest ground beside the wall, or from the higher side when the wall sits on a retaining wall. Because those figures come from an older bulletin, confirm the current limits with the city, and we check them before we build.
Will my block wall project need a soil or geotechnical report?
It can, because the city's Building Official may require a geotechnical report, a study of the ground, for a building permit on any site with a possible geologic hazard. Under that same older fence bulletin, a wall outside the city's standard designs is designed by a civil engineer or architect licensed in California, and a soil report may be required. I'll tell you at the estimate if your wall looks headed that way.
How do I keep a new block wall from cracking?
Plan for shrinkage before the first block goes down, because block shrinks a little as it dries and a crack shows up wherever the wall is weakest. A masonry trade group recommends horizontal reinforcement and control joints placed by local practice. Whoever you hire, ask how they plan those, and I'll show you where ours go on your wall.
How long does it take to build a block wall?
Most of the wait is usually before we dig, while any permit or engineered plans get sorted, and the build itself turns on the wall's length and height. For a retaining wall, trade guidance says soil goes behind it only once the block has gained enough strength or the wall is braced, and heavy machines stay back from the top by a distance equal to the wall's height during backfill. That curing time is part of why a retaining wall takes longer than a garden wall of the same size.
What license should a block wall contractor have in California?
Look for the masonry classification, which the state's contractor licensing board says covers load-bearing and non-load-bearing walls for structures and fences, with or without mortar. You can check any contractor's license with the state licensing board before you sign anything.

Other work that pairs with a block wall
Building concrete block walls in San Diego and nearby
Whether your wall needs a permit is up to the City of San Diego, or the County of San Diego if you're in an unincorporated area, and it isn't something I'll guess at. Height, where the wall sits on the lot and whether it holds back soil all play into it, as the questions above lay out. Before work starts we check with your city or the county, and when a permit is required we take care of the paperwork and the inspections.
We're based in San Diego and work across the city and the cities around it. A lot of the walls we build sit on sloped lots where one side is higher than the other, so the wall ends up holding soil as well as screening, and we plan drainage and footing depth for that from the start. We see the same kinds of yards on jobs in La Mesa and El Cajon, and if you don't see your city listed, give us a call and ask.
