Who builds and repairs stone walls in San Diego?

Stone masonry in San Diego means building walls and fences from natural or manufactured stone, set with mortar or without it, and repairing the ones you already have, so the wall carries its load, keeps water out and looks like it belongs to the house.

Most calls start with something you can see, like mortar falling out of the joints, a loose stone on a garden wall or a slope that keeps washing into the yard. The price turns on the stone you choose, how long and tall the wall is, what's under it and how much old work has to come out first, and the schedule turns mostly on whether the city needs a permit and how soon your stone arrives. I'll give you the number for your own wall once I've seen it on site.

Is stone masonry right for your home?

  • A sloped yard to hold

Natural stone set to carry its own weight can hold back a slope and suit the yard.

  • A plain block wall

Stone veneer can face a sound block wall without tearing down what's already standing there.

  • Old wall, crumbling joints

When the stones are still sound and only the mortar has worn, new joints usually fix it.

  • A garden wall or border

A low stone wall along a bed or patio gives the yard an edge that looks settled in.

How we build and repair stone masonry

We start at the bottom, checking the ground and footing the wall will sit on, because stone is heavy and a weak base shows up later as cracks. On a natural stone wall we set each stone so it carries its weight and sits tight against its neighbors, instead of counting on mortar to hold it in place, then fill and tool the joints or leave them dry, depending on the wall. When an older stone wall only needs its joints redone, we rake out the worn mortar and repoint with a mortar soft enough to let moisture out, and we leave the sound stone alone. We clean up as we go and haul off what we take out.

Stone work often sits next to other masonry. If the brick on your chimney or house has the same tired joints, that's brick pointing, done the same careful way. If a crack in a wall runs down into the house's footing, I'll tell you plainly, because that's a job for foundation repair before any stone goes back up. Walls that hold back soil are part of our retaining wall construction work.

  • Natural stone walls

Real stone suits garden walls, retaining walls and any wall that has to carry weight, because each piece is fitted by hand and holds itself up. It's heavier work, and it's what I'd pick when the wall has a job to do.

  • Manufactured stone veneer

Veneer suits a sound block or framed wall you'd like to see in stone, without building a new wall behind it. One maker's guide calls a full bed of mortar behind each piece essential, since even small gaps can hold water, so ask us how we bed each stone and I'll show you.

  • Dry stack veneer

Dry stack is laid with open joints and no mortar showing, which gives a clean, tight look. One maker's guide says it suits indoor work or places where it doesn't freeze and advises against open joints outdoors where walls go through freeze and thaw, so we'll talk through where it makes sense on your house.

  • Repointing an older stone wall

If the stones are fine and only the mortar has worn away, repointing the joints is usually all the wall needs. It's the smaller job, and when it's the right one, it's the one I'll recommend.

What happens when you call about stone masonry in San Diego?

  1. Call or send a message

Call (619) 220-2261 or use the form on this page and tell us a little about the wall. We get back to you and set a time for me to come out.

  2. I look at the wall

I come out, ask what's been going on and look at the stone, the joints and the base. You get an estimate on site that says what I'd fix, what I'd leave alone and what it costs, so you're not guessing about price.

  3. We check rules, then build

Once you say go, we check what your city or the county needs before anything is built. Then our crew does the work.

  4. Walk the finished wall together

When the wall is done, we walk it with you so you can see every stone and joint. If something doesn't look right to you, that's the time to say so.

Repair a stone wall or rebuild it?

Fix what failed and keep what's sound.

Most stone walls that look bad aren't failing everywhere. Usually it's the joints near the ground, a stretch where water runs down the face, or a few stones a root pushed loose. Taking down a whole wall to fix that wastes good stone and your money, so I look for what actually failed and fix that first.

A rebuild makes sense when the wall is leaning, the base has moved or stones are coming loose along a long run. Then we take the bad section down to a sound footing and reset it, reusing your stone where it's still good so the repair matches the rest of the wall.

Look through these examples of stone, brick and block masonry to get a feel for finishes, joint styles and wall types before we talk.

Why San Diego homeowners call Artisan San Diego Concrete & Masonry for stone work

  • I estimate and check the work

I'm the one who comes out to look at your wall and give the estimate. Our own masons and helpers do the work, and I'm on site checking it as it goes.

  • Learned on a San Diego crew

I started as a helper on a small masonry crew here, mixing mortar and watching the older hands fix what others got wrong, and I started this business in 2023. That's where I learned to repair what failed and leave sound stone alone.

  • Retaining walls kept on your land

City permit plans keep every part of a retaining wall on your land, footing and drainage included, with the water sent to a storm drain system or kept from running onto the neighbors. We lay out the footing and drain inside your lines for that reason, so the wall doesn't start trouble next door.

  • Licensed and fully insured

We're licensed and fully insured, which is worth asking any mason about before they start on your property. When you're ready, call (619) 220-2261 or send us a few photos through our form.

Stone masonry questions we hear

How do I know if my stone retaining wall needs a permit in San Diego?

Inside the City of San Diego, a retaining wall needs a building permit once it's over three feet tall measured from the top of its footing. The permit plans show the wall's length and height and how far it sits from nearby structures and property lines, so knowing where your lines are is a good first step.

How tall can a stone wall be along my front property line in San Diego?

Within the City of San Diego, a solid wall or fence on the front or street-side property line can be no more than 3 feet tall, apart from an exception in the city's code. We check which rule fits your lot before we lay out the wall, so it doesn't have to come down later.

What is the difference between manufactured stone and natural stone?

Manufactured stone is a lightweight veneer cast from cement and aggregates to look like natural stone, and it isn't load bearing. It's a stone face on a wall that does the carrying, while natural stone can be built into a wall that holds weight on its own. If you want stone on a wall you already have, veneer is usually the simpler route.

What is the best way to repair crumbling mortar in a stone wall?

The usual fix is repointing, which is raking the worn mortar out of the joints and packing in new mortar. Joints are where masonry wears most, so on a mortared stone wall this is the main upkeep to plan for. Guidance written for historic buildings warns that a mortar which traps moisture in the wall ends up damaging the stones, so the repair mortar should let the wall dry out.

How much does stone masonry cost in San Diego?

The cost comes down to the stone you pick, the length and height of the wall, the state of the base and how much old work has to come out first. Natural stone set by hand takes more labor than veneer, and a joint repair on a sound wall costs far less than a rebuild. You'll get a number for your own wall at the estimate.

What license does a stone mason need in California?

California's contractors board has a masonry contractor license that covers setting natural and manufactured stone in walls and fences, with or without mortar. If you'd rather act as your own contractor and do the work or hire licensed trades yourself, the city has you file an owner-builder form with your permit papers, which the city's retaining wall permit guide walks through.

Stone masonry rules and jobs in San Diego

Inside the City of San Diego, a retaining wall over three feet tall from the top of its footing needs a building permit, and so does any fence 7 feet or taller. The city's wall and fence rules still apply where no permit is required, so even a low garden wall has to fit them. Before work starts we check with the city, or with the County of San Diego if you're outside city limits, on what your wall needs, and when a permit is required we take care of the paperwork and the inspections.

Around San Diego we see a lot of older stone garden walls with tired joints, plus block walls owners want faced in stone, and we do the same work in La Mesa and El Cajon. We work in unincorporated county areas too, so if your city isn't listed, give us a call and ask.
